The A Factor. How Attitude Can Make Or Break Your Sales Career

Over the years I have had the good fortune to work with many talented sales pros. The one thing I have observed over that time and across multiple industries, is that the people with the right attitude always come out on top. Always.

Sure being smart and hardworking goes a long way. As does constantly learning and improving your craft. These things won’t matter one bit if you have the wrong attitude.  Now I’m not saying you have to be doing cartwheels into the office every morning, but I will tell you that if you are not optimistic, energetic, confident in your product or service, and absolutely certain that you will meet and exceed your goals, you are likely to fail.

Positive AttitudeWe have all worked with the nay sayers. The goal is too high, the prospects are too difficult, the product or service is not as good as it needs to be, they say. Typically they are the ones that are not getting it done. They have convinced themselves, they can’t succeed, and they are right.  With that attitude they can’t.

On the other hand, we have seen the always positive, can do people. Somehow someway, they get it done.  They make it happen instead of waiting for it to happen. When they miss a goal, they learn from it and make the changes to ensure they succeed next time. Typically they are the people who arrive early, stay late and go the extra mile for their company and their customer. They know they will succeed, and they do everything in their power to ensure they do. They are the ones the nay sayers call the lucky ones, the ones who have the better territories, the ones that got lucky and landed the whale. My Father has a great quote about luck. One day one of our neighbors yelled out after seeing my Father's brand new car. “Boy some people have all the luck” to which he replied, “yeah, the harder I work the luckier I get!” Always loved that line.

Most successful people have had to endure failure more than once. Without a positive attitude, these people may have taken the easy road and made excuses, instead they bounced back again and again until they achieved their goal. Perseverance, hard work, and a positive attitude is all you need to achieve your dreams. The good news, it’s all up to you.

Go out there and make your own luck!
